Victorian police confirm investigation into Cranbourne race

VICTORIAN police are investigating several high-profile racing identities over alleged race-fixing and a possible link to a trainer's murder.
Police are investigating race fixing believed to be centred on a race won by controversial jockey Danny Nikolic on Smoking Aces at Cranbourne in April 2011.
Racing Victoria will make a statement this afternoon regarding alleged race fixing in Victoria but racing integrity commissioner Sal Perna has defended the industry.

'My immediate response is, is the industry that bad? It's an isolated incident and the sport is generally a good sport," Perna said on RSN radio this morning.
He said he had been aware of the allegations since earlier this year pertaining to that race.
Perna said his phone hotline, set-up for people to anonymously pass on suspicions regarding races, had not had one incident raised in two years.
Victorian Police assistant commissioner confirmed the investigation.
"There is an investigation into an allegation that a race was fixed in Cranbourne last year, about April ... involving a horse of the name Smoking Aces," assistant commissioner Graham Ashton told reporters.
The race-fixing allegation emerged during a homicide investigation into the death of former horse trainer Les Samba, who was shot dead in Melbourne in February last year.
