Rowers Helen Glover and Heather Stanning claim Great Britain's first gold medal

EVEN the sheep on the banks of Lake Dorney looked up to see what the fuss was about.
The volcanic roar could have meant only one thing - Great Britain has won its first gold of the Games.

Great Britain was tipped to get its hands on more gold than a billionarie's wife this Games, but it took five days before rowers Heather Stanning and Helen Glover slammed it on the table in the women's pair.

Stanning and Glover.

In terms of famous British double acts, they may not have the instant recognition of Lennon and McCartney or The Two Ronnies but they will be remembered for their rest of their days as the women who delivered Britain gold when it was craving for it.

You could tell how much this win meant to Great Britain by what happened around it.
