MELBOURNE is in the box seat to become headquarters for the next series of MasterChef.
If the ambitious plan comes off, next year's fifth series of the hit show will be based at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds.
Centennial Hall would house the MasterChef kitchen and a special "MasterChef precinct" would be created, including a cooking school and a provedore.
The
move from Sydney to Melbourne would be a windfall for Victoria, with
the $30 million production generating about 260 TV jobs and 100 related
jobs.
The MasterChef juggernaut could move to the Showgrounds after the Royal Melbourne Show.
It
would be a boon for judges Matt Preston, George Calombaris and Gary
Mehigan, as well as executive producer Margaret Bashfield, all of whom
are based in Victoria.
"I'm sure it would make a lot of people happy," a TV source said.
Tourism Minister Louise Asher, Melbourne City Council, Tourism Victoria and MasterChef production company Shine are reportedly keen on the shift.
Tourism Victoria has sunk money into the show to have segments filmed in Victoria.
