Lagos State governor, Mr. Babatunde
Fashola (SAN), and Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, at
the weekend said the devastating impact of climate change could be
drastically mitigated in the state if all the residents are committed to
planting a tree annually.
The leaders expressed the view at the 2012 tree planting campaign in Mushin, Lagos , noting that the present generation faces a grim future if no decisive measures are taken to stem the effects of climate change.
He explained that the importance of planting trees in the environment could no longer be over-emphasised at the instance of flooding, rainstorms and ocean surge, urging all Lagos residents to join the government in its determination to build and create a cleaner and safer environment He said: “You can see extreme rainfall in the last 48 hours and not more than 50,000 people have been displaced in Japan. You can see the rain in Mississippi and in Newcastle, and there is still more to come.
“We can see now that the solutions we put in place last year has reduced the flood we experienced in some areas including Agege, Lekki and Arigbanla, Idi Araba, there is no flood there again despite the heavy rains.
